When most people think of depression, they think of old men or adult premenstrual women.  However, nearly 16% of all Americans suffer from depression at some point in their lives.  There is a frighteningly large and increasing number of depressives under 20 years of age.  Studies are now saying that one in every eight teenagers and one in every 33 children under the age of 12 suffer from depression.  It is also believed that children who have depressive episodes at such a young age are more likely to have more episodes within five years.

To add to the unfortunate this situation, depression is generally not recognized in young people, so they do not get the medical care and support that they need to deal with and overcome the problem.  There are medications that work well for children and teenagers, like there are for adults.  However, if they do not get this medication, their life can become a downward spiral.  In the worst cases, this can lead to suicide.

So what can be done?  First of all, watch for signs that children or teens may be struggling with depression.  Those signs may include the era debility, poor school performance, major changes in eating and sleeping patterns, sadness, or feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness.  Problems with low self-esteem, lack of enthusiasm, were suddenly withdrawing from activities that were formerly enjoyed are also warning signs.  Talk of death or suicide means they may be a risk, and you should talk to your health care provider immediately.  Many teams who do not become suicidal may turn to drugs or alcohol abuse to ease the pain they are feeling.
